Twenty-one year old Cailin Russo skyrocketed to fame after featuring in the music videos of a little known popstar called Justin Bieber. She was his love interest in “All That Matters” and “Confident”. 395,000 Instagram followers, 121,000 Twitter fans and countless dedicated websites later the Milk Model is now a fully-fledged social media star as well as a successful campaign face. We caught up with the LA-based beauty to discuss style, pursuing a career in music alongside modelling, and handling stardom.
If you weren’t a model would you still have an interest in fashion?
Absolutely. I love fashion, style and art in general.
How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as funky, eclectic and chic. It’s just enough crazy.
Who are your favourite designers/brands and why?
Marc Jacobs is probably my favorite designer. It fluctuates a lot depending on my mood. I love Mr. Jacobs because he is quirky and chic with his designs, patterns and colour choices. Besides him I love Vivienne Westwood, Versace, Valentino, Zana Bayne and YSL.
You are constantly on the go and travelling for campaigns and shoots. Where’s the most impressive place you’ve visited recently?
Tokyo, Japan. It’s a high energy city of insanity. The fashion is extreme. The people at night make the city a different world – it’s beautiful.
You’re learning the piano and want to crack the music industry. Could you tell us more about your musical pursuits?
I am learning the piano! I love it, I crave it. And I am cracking into music. I grew up with music so being surrounded in it – I had to make something of my own. Right now I’m working on developing my own project and sound to make sure it is 100% original and true to the sounds I want. I am an artist and want to pursue being one.
Obviously starring in Biebs’ music videos catapulted you straight into the limelight but what have been your career highlights to date? Are you overwhelmed by the public interest and number of followers you have?
Career highlights would obviously be the videos! As far as modeling goes — shooting in Alaska for Aeropostale was amazing and they really used the images in a great way. Then Abercrombie when I was 18 was amazing. Shooting in Martha’s Vineyard was ridiculous. Then also the few beauty campaigns have really helped put me in the public eye I feel. But I really want to do more art driven projects now. Am I overwhelmed? Not really, I feel like people follow me because I post real life and work that makes people see me as human and not some Instagram life person. There isn’t really a pressure that I think about at least.
What would be your advice to your younger self or a nervous new face?
Don’t hold back.
How do you keep in shape? Do you enjoy a cheeky McDs occasionally?
I try and do a lot of cardio and good conditioning – I recently started boxing. And not really. I love being active and eating healthy. Life is just easier – it’s like why eat a bag of filth and feel filthy when you can eat clean and feel clean?
When you get back home what’s the first thing you do?
The first thing I do is unpack, dance and joke around with my roommate.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Right now I can’t get over Hozier and J.Cole… Completely random, but I love both of their albums.
Can you tell us a secret?
I drool in my sleep.
